I haven't done this much myself—a little in a past job, but not in years and never for my own stuff. So, I can't say if I'm doing "right" or in the usual way, but this is the bulk of the request I emailed Stefan Poag:
This a personal/non-commercial project. I don't plan to promote it in any serious way, but it would be publicly available on my website.
The format is digest (half U.S. letter 8.5 x 5.5") black and white. I don't need original artwork, only hi-res scans at full or double print size at 600 dpi in a lossless format like TIFF or PNG.
I'm not particular about the specific content, just something that demonstrates old-school themes like:
-- characters in serious peril from a monster or trap -- characters at a decision point, perhaps confronting the Weird
Other than that, just whatever you think is cool. Odd hats/helmets/hoods/masks and characters who look like Regular Joe's not super heroes are a plus.
Can we start with one B&W piece to be reproduced at 8.5 x 5.5 (portrait orientation)? Let me know what time frame and payment method works best for you.
Presumably you pick an artist whose work you already like, so you might as well let them follow their muse. Of course, if you're looking for a particular piece—a spell illustration, an image designed to fit around with typography, or whatever—then you let them know that too.
That is very nice work.
ReplyDeleteThat right there, is the real deal - beyond totally awesome. So when are you posting stats for the ceiling monster?
ReplyDeleteHoly crap, is that a Decapus?
ReplyDeleteMr. Poag does great work.
Awesome.
ReplyDeleteCould be a decapus, I suppose, or a more general bug-eyed monster. I love the suction cup tongue.
ReplyDeleteStefan's work is always awesome, but this piece is particularly good. It reminds me a bit of Otus.
ReplyDeleteNice. I'm curious, because I've never done this, what you asked for, how specific were you?

The process was painless on my end.
Extremely jealous. That's an awesome pic. Very evocative! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI might add that the dwarf is at least as disturbing to me as the ceiling abomination. Even odds which one is a more immediate threat...
ReplyDeleteHe has a really excellent style. Nice one.
ReplyDeleteThanks Paul, appreciate the info.
ReplyDeleteYeah! Looks pretty great and fantasy-ish. Nice!
